Hey Folks,

After a month of building stuff for the shop, and cleaning up and organizing the shop, I finally found time to do a little woodworking.

This is a simple but elegant tabouret that was featured in Popular Woodworking a while back. It's made of quarter sawn white oak. The pics are of the unfinished dry assembly. The finish will be orange shellac and dark wax, with a top coat of poly, just because it's a table top. I'll add some pics when it's all done.

Cheers,
Tom

Looks great Tom. I have that magazine somewhere around here, I have it on a list of "to do's". I think it would look well along with my Amish style tables,

Nice table Tom

I have a question. how do you account for seasonal changes? I see all of your guys work I hear about wood movement ( I agree it exists) I am not a wood movement denier.
Our temps do not change 40-50 degrees. how do you make things that look well fit, but not bust up like a bar scene in a western?

MANGO: Just use grain orientation and good planning. Try this for more details.

Hey Mango,

Newtooth's link has a good explanation. Basically, since the whole piece is quarter sawn, the movement is, significantly, in only one direction. The legs are even arranged as if they were still in the log! The top is attached with toggles, screwed to the top, that engage slots cut into the legs. I used a small biscuit slotting bit on the router table to cut the slots 1/4" below the top edge. The toggles will allow both the top and the legs to move as needed to accommodate changes in humidity.

Cheers,
Tom

Beautiful piece TMS. Perfect choice of lumber.

Hey Ron,

Thanks.
When I sold the table, I made sure to credit the sawyer's art, in capturing the ray flecks of the quarter sawn white oak. It's a successful collaboration with someone whom I've never met.

Cheers,
Tom

Very nice work. No matter how hard I try I always seem to goober up a bottom shelf like you have done so well.

I'm happy you sold the table. that is awesome.

Thank you for the explanation. I need to start incorporating that in the things I make. in the event we move to the mainland. Humidity is relatively stable here
