This all started a couple of years ago. What used to take 3 hook and loop delta orbital sanding disc ,now takes 5 of them.
I do the same sanding job on my little canoes just like I have for the last 20 years. I use the same company and the same brand of sand paper and grit. They just don't last anymore. I just don't get it.
Chime in all

I doubt that I do as much sanding as you do, LB, so it's been at least three years since I bought any sandpaper. Sheets that is. As of the ROS pads, they've never seemed to last very long.

Hey Ralph,

I think that I actually get better performance than I did years ago. But that may be because I now buy better (more expensive) sandpaper than before. I also have a better ROS than before, so it's difficult to judge. All considered, technology has improved the coated abrasives business, as with most things over the years.

My 2ยข,
Tom

Pressing harder now in an attempt to work faster? That's certainly a factor. With high flex backing, a big factor, because you bend so much you break the resin and kick grit. I thought I was running into the same problems until I realized that I was starting one grit finer than usual and trying to force things. Back to starting coarser did it for me. Klingspor is what I'm using.

In my experience paying a little more for a higher grade sandpaper makes a noticeable difference in lasting longer.
