Hi All,
I'm refinishing an oak table and my finish will be Poly. I would like to fill the pores without adding extra coloring to the wood. Any suggestions?
Thanks. Larry

I've used Daly's paste wood filler with good results and only a slight darkening of the wood (ash). I'd try it on some like scrap if you have an. Other than that bit of darkening, it worked great for me.

If you are going to stain the table Durham's Rock Hard Water Putty absorbs stain about the sain as oak.
If not using a sanding sealer or using a filler that is tinted to the colour of the wood.

My brother used shellac and wet sanded his oak table top to a very smooth finish and filled the pours with the oak sanding dust at the same time.
I have done basically the same thing using BLO on some smaller things. The BLO (or shellac) holds the sanding dust in the pours long enough to get a poly or other hard shell finish on the item and holds the color at the same time.

Thank you for your replies. I don't want to stain the top so I think I'll give Roger's suggestion a try with shellac. I'm planning on using Poly as the finish. Again, Thank You all.
