Looking to buy a new joiner. I have an old craftsman 6 inch joiner, but I don't like it. Mostly because for me changing and aligning new blades is a real time consuming pain.
I am looking to buy one that will join a piece wider than 6 inches.
And, I would like one that changing the blades is a simple operation. I am thinking like my K735 planer in that when installing new blades there is no alignment required.
Suggestions and any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
George

Changing knives isn't easy but I swear by my Delta DJ20. There are some tricks to doing it that ease the pain, though.

I like my Grizzly. My 6" Griz has springs below the knives and comes with a tool that sets the knives at a precise height. i get great Results and am now eyeing the 12" long bed as my next purchase. The spiral cutter heads have no height adjustment but are pricey and you will have lots of small cutters to change or rotate. I am skeptical about them and will stick with the straight knives.

Possibly inaccurate supposition, but the Sears does not have an adjustable outfeed table? The one from AMT so long ago?

Any jointer with an adjustable outfeed can do a blade change pretty easily. Springs, cams or magnetic lift, your choice, to level knives with the lowered outfeed table. Examples everywhere, http://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=set ... &FORM=VDRE If you don't like adjusting conventional knives, go helical.

I have a 6" Grizzly, and love it. I opted to order the spiral cutting head about a year after having my Grizzly, that was about 3 years ago. I have yet to turn the cutting heads, it still cuts like new.

Hey George,

The trick to setting joiner knives is to get a magnetic jig. The jig pulls the knives up to the same level as your output table and perfectly parallel. I have a Grizzly 6" that I like, but was never too fond of the springs that Dewayne mentioned. The magnetic jig works so much better, and on any joiner which you have to clamp the knives into the head.

Rockler has one for sale, but there are others as well.

Cheers,
Tom
