Let me start off by saying that I had a birfday last month and my family gave me the usual woodworking gift...A book!
It is "Woodworking Projects" from American Woodworker. It is quite interesting and informative but, full of larger projects than I don't feel up to building right now. But, near the back pages was plans for an interesting puzzle, and I've been looking for Christmas gifts for the grand kids anyway so, WHY NOT?
The plans start of by saying "Here's a puzzle that's devilishly difficult to solve but quite easy to make." WELL LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT IT!
To start you have to make a jig to hold 3/4" hardwood dowels 2-1/2" long to drill 1/2 round notches in them.
Then you have to make a jig for the drill press to hold the jig for the dowels and clamp it securely so you can keep the forester bit in line for repeated use.
That is an under statement. A few of the dowels get drilled three times!
By the way, there are six pieces of dowels and one of them does not get drilled.
After drilling and sanding, you get to assemble the puzzle just to make sure that things fit the way they are suppose to. In my case that means FIVE times!
This is were you find out that you've messed up on the drilling sequence and get to remake a couple of pieces.
OK, now how do you put finish on THIRTY little ROUND 2-1/2" pieces?
Guess I'll just dip them and go from there.
Buy the way, if you decide to subject your self to this "pain in the @$$" project, plan on making a "test" puzzle first. It is more of a challenge than you might think. TRUST ME!
Guess what I'll be doing Christmas eve......Reassembling dowel puzzles for those little Imps that can't wait to "DO IT MYSELF!"
