I know some of you have a computer in the shop. Do you take any precautions to keep sawdust out? I imagine it can be the best thing for the computer?

I've had a laptop in the shop for at least 10 years. :) This one for the last 7 years and had NO problems because of the environment.
The first one rode around on my tool truck for 6 years as a business computer before I brought it in the shop. 8)
Every once in awhile I wash off the screen with water and blow the dust out of the keys with the shop air compressor. :o
My son, who sells and works on computers, CRINGES when he sees the condition of my machine.
He also recommends that I turn it off at nights but, I figure that I may wake up at 3:00 AM and want to see "face book" with out "warming up" the screen. So, I just leave it on and close the lid so it can get a bit of sleep at night. :D
As you can see, I wouldn't worry about it! :)

PS The first one was a Panasonic and the current one is a Toshiba running Windows 7.

From what I've read about maintenance in general, a vacuuming is preferred to blowing with compressed air. Blowing the dust out, also can drive it deeper into the keyboard and other areas.

Do you ever use the CD/DVD drive? Besides the keyboard, that's the area I'd think is most vulnerable.

I vaccumed a keyboard once, took about a week for the new keyboard to arrive. Installing it was easy though.

I have an old used MacBook in the shop, along with a printer. I dust it every so often, and gently blow the dust out of the keyboard using canned air. I keep them covered with an old blanket when not in use. Still working good after a year or so

I have had many computers in my middle school shops for 12+ years and was told they would fail..................have not had one dust related failure. They are off to the side of the worst dust, but they get dust for sure.

Well lets see here  I had a HP Desktop in my shop for a few years. The thing sucked in dust so bad that the computer over heated and shut down. I blew the thing out with my air gun and the thing works fine now. Leave the computer in the house. :D

I take my iPad into the shop all the time. I just slip it into a Ziploc bag-- the touch screen works fine through the bag, and not a speck of dust gets in. Also, with the bag I never have to worry about what I might have on my hands before touching it.
