My wife and I have some dear, old friends who are having their 50th wedding anniversary this month so a gift was required of course. We decided that picture frames might be appropriate so guess who got to build some "special, custom" frames.
Never one to be too traditional, I came up with a really unusual set of frames.... in book form....

The people in the pictures are not the gift couple, that is Goodoldwhatshername and me. (We have only been married for 46 years :-D ) These were just practice photos to see how the frames worked. Their daughter is suppose to come up with some shots of her parents for the gift.

Of course, if you are going to make one book, you may as well make four at once. The rest will have different covers and used for Christmas gifts to other people.

Now THAT is VERY cool!
I like it a lot.

I've never been able to do that kind of inlay ... perhaps someday.

Maybe my eyesight is a bit slack this morning (or the picture is fuzzy) but I can't quite make out the details for the pages.
Are they routed with little grooves to give the appearance of page leafs?

I may very well have to steal this idea!
:D

Yea, well Dan, I consider myself a woodworker not a photographer and the photo IS very blurry.
Actually the pages are represented by using birch plywood. I glued three layers of 3/4" ply together (I cut out the center section of the center piece first) and then re sawed the block to create the two frames.
As luck would have it, I took time to snap a few shots during the build so that if I had a request, I could do a tutorial.

I did the inlay on the cover with a scroll saw and used door skin material for the cover. I just ran the grain sideways for the letters so that the light catches it just enough to show without being too gaudy.

In this case, I made the frames for pictures 4" x 6" in size. Obviously you can make them as big or small as you want to.
I put a short (1/2") screw in all four corners of the back and put a small magnet in the corners of the oak, oval frame to match the screw locations so that the oval part will pull out to change the pictures in the frame.
If you would like more shots of various steps of construction, just ask. I have 22 pictures at different steps of the build.
I'm always happy to share different ways and ideas on doing things like this.....STEAL AWAY!!! :-D
