Hey Folks,
Here are some progress photos of the turntable project that I first posted as Spirits in the Wood.
The project is finally freed from the exterior waste and holdfast, and has a coat of finish on it. The voids were filled with crushed malachite as per the customer's preference. Personally, I prefer turquoise, but it wasn't my choice to make.
Next up is mounting the bearing, and make the base.
Cheers,
Tom

Nice work!

I agree with you that turquoise would be better looking than the Malachite, but I think ebony colored epoxy would work even better.
I just used some on some voids on highly figured cherry project I'm working on and like it very much.
But, it is the clients decision.

Are those screw holes around the stock panel holding it to the substrate?
Did you route the turntable free from it in that fashion?
It's a solid technique and much safer than double-sided tape.

Did you make that coffin scraper plane?
Seems the perfect tool to smooth around the "dog" and "owl".

Hey Guys,

Thanks for the compliments. I had not seen the owl before, but now I do. It's interesting that everyone seems to see the figure a little differently.

Hey Dan,
Yes, the margin is screwed down to the plywood. I usually do that for safety, but the center is also secured with double stick tape, for when it is cut free of the waste.
And yes, I did make the scraper plane. It was one of the first projects that I posted here. It was indispensable for working the figure smooth. That, a smoothing plane, and a good card scraper.

Cheers,
Tom

Very nice work! Can you explain how you do the crushed stone fill?

I must be missing something. What are the circular grooves inside and outside the bearing? About all I can come up with is that you toss in loose bearings, but there's not mention or sign of that.

Hey Fasteddie,
I use crushed stone purchased from Craft Supplies USA, and mix it with some epoxy. I press it in and level it off; after it cures I sand it smooth. It usually takes more than one application, so it's best not to mix up all the stone at once.

Hey Drstrip,
The grooves are to relieve the stresses in the reaction wood. When I cut the book matched pieces, they bowed like this ( ). I used floating tenons to line up the edge joint, but that left some stress in the wood. The grooves on the underside are just assurance that it will stay flat over time.

Cheers,
Tom

Hey Folks,

I know it's been awhile, but this last bit has been slower going. After I finished the top side of the turntable, I decided to add a more personalized touch to the usually unseen underside. I thought a bit about what to do with this unused space, and took inspiration from a company that for many years was the master of underutilized fence posts along the highways of rural America.
The lettering is incised and stamped. I used a paper stencil tacked down with spray glue. The letters are incised using various chisels, then they are stamped using a nail set. The letters are painted while the stencil remains, using a stippling brush. The stencil is sanded away leaving the letters in stamped relief. A coat of wipe on poly completes the chore.
If you turn the turntable upside down, you can rotate the foot so that the words appear in the windows.

In case you didn't catch it, the words say,
Within this vale
of toil and sin
Your head grows bald
but not your chin
Burma Shave

Cheers,
Tom

That is a VERY interesting idea!
I remember and enjoying all the Burma shave signs along the highway years ago but, I don't really remember any of the slogans anymore.
I think it would be very interesting not to tell anyone about your "trick" just to see who will be the first to find it! :D

Rog

PS I often sign my projects before they are completed just so I can put my name in a place that would make someone wonder "HOW THE HECK DID HE DO THAT?!" if and when they find it. :D Like inside of the front of a small box with the lettering placed so I would have had to be inside the box to write it. :-D

Hey Rog,
Check out this site.
It's where I found the jingle that I used.
Cheers,
Tom
