Thanks for all the advisors who were helpful. My decision is to use some epoxy on the rod and hope for the best. So long as no one picks up the sculputure by the head or otherwise tests the bond, it should be OK. For most of the life of the sculpture it sits serenly on a shelf.

One suggestion, and an idea I considered. is to use a 1/2" x 2" pice of tubing to hold the head above the base and then a threaded rod could pass from the head, through the tube, and then through the base to a washer and nut. This woul have ment chiseling out the smooth rod and replacing it with a threaded rod. That would set me back two or three days for completion. I am leaving for Venice in three days. So no dice on that approach.
