Anybody done this?

I do not think that it will work as I have stripped screws when using red oak for a face frame.
But you might try using the course'st screw you can find. They do make special screws for use in MDF etc.

I wouldn't expect it to last long; the screws will IMO work loose.

I haven't done this exact thing; however, I have attempted to install knock-down hardware fixtures into melamine/pc core with consistent failure.

Put enough of anything in it and it should hold. :D

Hi All,
As long as you mentioned pocket screws, and I don't mean to hijack your thread, I have been having a problem stripping out the darn things, in both hard woods and soft, and I have been using this system for three years. Anybody else having this problem? I just got some replacement screws from Kreg, and the very same thing is still happening. Any thoughts?
Thanks.

Larry

I believe there are screws designed with a special thread that are used with MDF and such. Perhaps the Kreg folk can provide them for system. I don't know that I'd rely on them for any kind of structural integrity at the joint. I would think that biscuits or dowels would provide more strength if it's an issue. But MDF will hold screws, even ordinary wood screws if they're driven with care. I don't put a lot of faith in them, though.

What sort of project do you have in mind that would involve pocket screws into MDF and particle board?

the screws your looking for for MDF are called conformate (sp) screws , they are specially designed for use in MDF

Here's how I did it:

1. Drill 1/2" holes where I wanted the screw to go. Some were through and through and others were blind.

2. Glue 1/2" dowel in hole.

3. Screw screw into dowel.

In my experience screws will not hold in MDF or Melamine.

The construction method I mentioned has been holding for 5 years.

Chuck's got the method. It's the only thing I could recommend.

Even in the best situations with PB the screw makes a one way trip. And whatever you make out of this junk should be fixed to a wall and not move....

Can you tell I hate the stuff?
