I installed the wing warping control cables today. The wing warped as intended with great results. :D :D The following photos show the right and left wing warp as I pull the cable ether to the R/L. and the wing straight when at rest. :D I have yet to make the hip cradle that the pilot will use to control the aircraft, but I do have an operational Wright wing.
As a builder/pilot of an aircraft/flying machine I have officially named the aircraft the Roberta Jane, after my wife and co-pilot. :D :D

That is just too cool. It's pretty neat when what you plan actually works.

Wouldn't know about that. Haven't had it happen yet :D

Everyone tells me that I have a 'warped' mind but, I don't have any cables tied to it!

WOW, that really shows the effect well. I can see exactly how that would affect the airflow and lift. By the looks of it, it only warps one wing at a time to reduce lift on the inside wing of the intended turn, but the opposet wing remains with the same amount of lift as when in level flight.

I'd thought that, much like modern AC, the wings would inversly warp. When one would warp to loose lift, the other would warp to gain lift.

Well, I learn something new every day.

Frank, the photos dont show it but both wings do warp at the same time , its just the angle of the photo, one leading edge one wing tips up and the other wing dips down. Also I need to tweek the standing rigging too. That will help.
Also I would like to thank the members of the forum who have taken an interest in this project. A BIG THANKS :D

OHhhhhh, I see it now. I can tell more by looking at the verticle struts, and how they lean forward on the up side and back on the down, or inside of the trun. You really have to look at the entire wing surface then. About the only static part is the center section over and around the pilot if I'm seeing this right.

Yes, Frank the center of the wing was not made to warp, this due to the rigging in this area (on each side of the pilot ) is running from leading edge to tailing edge thus cant be warped. where the rigging on the rest of the wing runs from leading edge to leading edge, and tailing edge to tailing edge. The Wrights in the 1903 flyer (powered) was rigged so just the wing tips could warp and not the rest of the wing.

Now it's more than just an oversized model, it's alive and working as you intended. I agree with PK, that's just too cool. I bet you're pretty happy with the results. Congratulations on the build, keep it up.

I have several projects that warped, none as intended.

Hey, Tom, I have taken quite an interest in your adventure, but I don't comment much.....airplanes just fly to me....I don't totally understand how, but luckily the ones I've been on do fly

So, keep up the great work, and keep on explaining in your way of helping me to understand the act of flying.

Thanks

Verna

Hey Tom,

I've really enjoyed watching your model go together. A friend of mine once built a Bleriot model, similar to this one. http://www.vintage-aerodrome.com/K&W_Fr ... _XI-1L.jpg

Since then, I've always had it in my mind to make a model of the
Santos-Dumont Demoiselle ("Damselfly").
Image

Most people don't realize that Europe once heralded Santos-Dumont as the first to fly, for years after the Wrights, because of their extreme secrecy. My affection for the Demoiselle is purely aesthetic; to me its anachronistic appearance just says Aeroplane (as opposed to airplane, or aircraft).

It was an impractical, and improbable flyer, suited only for the tiniest of pilots. An interesting note, is that they had to use as woman pilot to fly the reproduction in the movie, "Those Magnificent Men and Their Flying Machines", because none of the male stunt pilots were light enough.

NOVA did a great story on it here http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/santos/hadingham.html

Tom
