Can you spray lacquer over latex paint? If so, anything I need to be aware of? I will probably be using spray can lacquer (Deft) if it will work.

Lacquer will make varnish (poly) and enamel paint lift (wrinkle). Don't know about latex. Is there a hidden area where you could make a test?

Unfortunately, no. I used water-based poly over latex the last time, but I'm really crunched for time and was looking for something that dried quicker.

Hey John,

You can apply lacquer over latex, but your adherence will only be as good as that of the latex, so your surface prep is important. Also, if the latex was put on over an oil based finish, then the lacquer is sure to lift it in some areas, unless the latex coverage is perfect. Not worth the risk, in my estimation.

Have you considered using shellac? It dries as fast as lacquer without being as toxic, and it will stick to everything, without lifting an oil finish.
It's not as durable as lacquer, but if you must, you can overcoat with lacquer, no problem.

Tom

John, you can also get water base lacquer. That's just about all I use now.

It is bare wood with a primer and semi-gloss exterior latex. Looking to make it a little shinier and slipperier. Shellac is not too good with water and/or outdoor conditions.
