I spent the day working on the dog rail and gluing the last couple boards to the top. I used my stacked Dado to cut the dogs. The dado is 3/4" maximum , so I cut each one twice to get the 1" required. It cut the 7/8" depth clean with a moderate feed rate. I was very happy how they turned out.

This is the entire rail, the biscut slots are visible between dados. I did angle the dados very slightly towards the vice end, opposite angle on the vice cuts. Someone or something I read mentioned this to help hold the piece down on the table. Could be a tale, but one incorporated into my bench.

Here is the last glue up for the main top. Tomorrow I can cut it to length, and begin layout for the 4-3/8" edge. I think I will bread board the end pieces, and dovetail these to the sides. This seems to be the general practice.

Tonight I dragged the old 18" chop saw bench (visible in photo) I've been using outside the garage, no more looking back. It served many a good day, but I really think I'll like the new one. I'll keep you posted.

Well, Ed, I was trying to figure out exactly what a "dog" rail was......obviously my mind was on the furry four-legged creatures

Your bench really shows all of the hard work you've put into it--it looks great!!!

After all of the weight of the top, how are you ever going to move that monster?????

Keep the in-progress pics coming--I love 'em.

Yeah, Verna, it was the same with me. I thought it had something to do with man's best friend.

That's gonna be a super bench, Ed!

I was on the canine track too :) . That is going to be a beautiful bench and I suspect heavy as well.

Sorry to mislead you on the title, since it holds the bench dogs that was the logical name. Here it is installed.

The top is lag bolted to the rails, now I have a place to work, but not yet a working vice.

Thanks for comments and the encouragement.

Very impressive Ed!
You must be very pleased with your new bench.

Well, Ed, I'm very impressed and just a little jealous. You did the dog rail just the way I plan to do mine when I can get to it.

Beautiful work.

I'm curious thought, that chop saw isn't by any chance a Porter-Cable? If you gonna take it outta service I am in dire need of parts for mine. I plan to post a question in a second here.
