Hello everyone,

I am going to make a cutting board out of maple, cherry and walnut for a Christmas presents. The design will be similar to the one in Wood Mag. a few years ago. I have 2 questions.

What is the best glue to use for a cutting board?

I think I will use mineral oil for a finish is that safe?

Thanks Mark

I've made several, a couple that are still in use in local restaurants after 3 years (Regulations may prohibit wooden boards for commercial use in some States ).

Used TBII, mineral oil, and supplied them with care & feeding instructions on a 5x8 card. Be sure to include sanitizing instructions. A weak mix of either bleach or vinegar in a handy spray bottle is the easiest, or the sanitary wipes available in grocery stores.

TBIII for these around 4 years ago and they are still going strong (one had to be re-glued on one line after going through a dishwasher every couple of weeks for a while)

TBIII is a lot more waterproof than II and a bit longer open time so I would use that. I still would not recommend a dishwasher use though, at least not routinely. Just make sure they know that mineral oil has to be redone from time to time to keep it looking good. From my information salad bowl finish is basically a wiping varnish and while I have read that all finishes are safe after totally cured (some up to a month or more I believe) I think salad bowl and others would not take kindly to cutting board use. Just my 2 cents worth.

Titebond III sounds like the way to go from what I've read recently.
