I've been looking at getting a drum sander for quite some time now. Well, Amazon finally convinced me with the 24month/no interest program. Here's a photo of her:

The one thing I really don't like about it is the stand. You can't see the mounting holes from above so you have to lie on your back. Here's the result:

I ran a few test pieces and then made a quick&dirty picture frame from Alder with a mahogany inlay. Here's how it came out with the default sandpaper:

And just for giggles, here's a picture of my extremely messy shop. I have a couple projects going and with the five boxes that the drumsander came in, I have junk everywhere. For those without sharp eyes, the inventory of tools are: two tablesaws, bandsaw, midilathe (blocked by bandsaw), SCMS, jointer, drillpress, and multiple small tools like routers and handplanes. The drillpress, SCMS, and jointer are not in the photo.

A,

By the look of the frame, looks like the drum sander is working as designed. Your shop doesn't look messy to me, just worked in. :D

Take care,
Carlos

Congratulations!

One question, I've got the same sander and have been looking for a flexible 4" hose to use. Where did you find yours?

Thanks.

Doug

The hose is from Woodcraft, although I have to admit I have been eyeing the Rockler expandable hose. 3 feet compressed, 21 feet expanded or something along those lines. I would love to have fixed ducting, but everything in my garage, I mean shop, has to be on wheels so fixed anything is a no-go.

Adam -

I've got that same sander, too. Yer gonna love it!

Be sure to check it out and do a little tuning if needed. 'Out of the box', mine needed tweaking of the drum head. Use a piece of plywood at least as wide as the length of the drum. Scribble pencil lines all over it and run it through the sander. All the lines should have been sanded equally.

Almost forgot -

Is that infeed table an option that I failed to take advantage of? If I had any complaint at all about this tool it would be the difficulty in managing long pieces both infeed and outfeed.

I've got the performax 16/32 and I have to say that it made a lot of previously impossible tasks possible.... I'm sure your 22/44 will be the same, only moreso.

Ditto what the others said about tuning it in... I've found that chalk and MDF work well for getting an idea on where it needs tweaking... Klingspor is great for large rolls of paper as well.

Nice score, you suck!

@Deniss - Yes, the infeed/outfeed tables are an option. The tuning went well: all my test pieces came out fine without any adjustments to the actual drum. The only item I had to adjust was the conveyor belt. It was tracking to one side.
