Awhile back I asked your opinions on adding some felt to the drawers on a jewelry chest I had started. So I finally got it finished.
Image
See "jewelry chest"

It is anigre veneers over mdf, with 1/4 sawn sappele trim. Bubinga hinges, and spalted mutenyi base and drawers with some bloodwood behind the finger pulls.

So I entered it in our annual intra guild show in the intermediate category and woo-hoo, I got first place, a blue ribbon and abit of cash.

I was surprized at the results,

So now I am banished from the intermediate category and have to enter in the advanced category in the future.

It was a fun show with alot of really nice stuff!!

WOW LEN! THAT IS JUST STUNNING!   With work like that, I can well see why they bumped you up in the standings.

Truly a beautiful piece with amazing finish and attention to detail. I really love your choice of timbers and how it all pulls together.

OUTSTANDING! 8) 8) 8) 8)

Thanks all! The wooden hinges were the biggest challenge. I finally bought an incra hingemaster jig to drill the holes. I cut the finger joints for the barrels with my jointec fence, similar to the incra fence. Quite a few of those hinges became pretty firewood.

The finish is 4 coats of Dalys profin gloss that was rubbed out with 600g then waxed with crystal wax. Thanks for the comments!

Hey Len,

Beautiful work! What finish did you use?

Congratulations on getting bumped upstairs!

I love it, Len!!! The trays and hangers for the earrings are perfect!!! I need to make something like that for me

And, the contrasting woods are a perfect match--you did a very good job at the eye-pleasing contrast.

Tom, the finish is 4 coats of profin gloss, rubbed out with 600g, then waxed with crystal wax.

As far as going pro, my pro friends can do a box like that is 2 or 3 days, it took me weeks if I add it all up.

I did a run of inexpensive small boxes and none of them sold at the last show. Trying to make a living of a hobby is a tough row to hoe! I enjoyed making this one, the next should be abit more of a challenge since I have to compete with the big dogs.

Thanks for the comments!

Man, that is awesome-- I'm especially loving the hinges-- I made a few a while back and I know how fun they can be to make. You've incorperated them VERY nicely into that project.

Are there magnets somewhere that are used as a door catch? I'm also curious how you accounted for edge movement in the miters-- are they just small enough pieces that they will hold or did you enforce them with splines/biscuits/etc? Sapele is a fairly stable wood so I'd imagine you're ok no matter what you did, I'm truly just curious.

It sure is a beautiful piece and it is worthy of your prize. I can't wait to see what you do next year.

Lawrence, I did use 4- 3/8" rare earth magnets for catches, you can see them just above the base and on the bottom of the doors.. They hold really well.

The frame around the top is bisquited, and the miters are just glued with a pre cat alphetic resin.(super roo glue) But the aniger top is veneers on mdf, so I don't expect movement issues.

The door frames are M & t joints.with 1/4" veneered panels.

By the way, that anigre veneer is some of the material I bought from Jim Mattson awhile back from the WWA.
