I am not a varnish user but I want to use some on the kitchen cabinets I am building.

I am going to use a spit coat of shellac, three coats of wipe on poly and then I wanted to add a coat or two of varnish for durability.

I would want a satin finish.

Does anyone have any brand recommendations?

It's not clear to me that varnish will be more durable than the poly.

Wipe-on poly is varnish. Varnish being a vehicle and a resin, and this one is urethane. Other resins are alkyd or phenolic, but urethane is an excellent choice.

Stinker with varnish is that each coat must bond mechanically to the previous, so I would put up high-test poly in two coats and cut back on one prep.

With the wipe on - especially in a kitchen - you may want to use more than three coats. Something like five would be best.

And, you wouldn't really need to go beyond that... Poly is tough...

If you want a nice satin finish that is easy to apply try the Gel Urethane Topcoat from General Finishes. Easy wipe on finish, tough and great looking!

I know there was an article on varnishes in FWW 178. Just can't find that issue since it is in a stack somewhere in the mess that I call my office.

The three layer approach I was refering to was mentioned in a recent article I read about finishing kitchen cabinets. I'll have to dig through my recent magazines to see it again.

I just want to avoid spraying lacquer...

Alden, I've sprayed Target Coatings water base lacquer with great success.
