Last summer my youngest and I built this:

that house went all summer empty, but this spring it has been 'claimed' by a pair of wrens & a pair of swallows. To decrease the bird condo ratio issue. My DW asked for a new birdhouse.

I was just puttering out in the shop, and not 'up' to making anything major, but I got inspired and cut this out of some twisty Box elder I had on hand...

(Patrick wouldn't smile for me)

We went out and installed it:

Time well spent-- congrats on the memories you have made for your son... and for the birds!

Great work on both and good that you share your shop time with the youngin'. I'm thinking I may have to build one. For the second time I've got a Robin who's built a nest right above my back door. It makes it danged near impossible to use the door until the chick flys.

Thanks all, The first one was a lot of fun with Patrick. Last nights I hate to say was mostly my time in the shop. He helped me screw it all together and held the flashlight for the install though!

Frank,
Robins like to build on a platform, so if you do build one for them, think wide open shelf vs house. They don't like to be closed in as it were. Let me guess they built on top of a light or a sconse of some sort?

Pretty good. Now, if you guys want to take it to the next level, look for forum member AJ Hamler's new book coming out this summer:
