Well, after all the help and suggestions I got on my glue question, I feel that I owe you guys an update.
With the help of Mo, I got the first stage of gluing done Saturday afternoon. :-D Left it in the clamps until Sunday afternoon. Then of course, Mo left for the hills, :x so I did the second stage by myself. Wasn't a "real piece of cake" but, I gotterdone! :D
Besides trying to get everything all in line, I broke a clamp! (They just don't make plastic like they used to)
Im afraid that I may not have gotten as much glue in the joints as I wanted to but, I later "drizzled" some down into the gaps of the slats and think it is OK now.
So here it is today (Monday afternoon).....

See "All in one piece"

And as I talked about, "Beer Thirty" 8) ......

See "A try out on the rocker"

I'm really better looking than that but, Mo took the picture so what can I say?..... :D

See "Practicing for Cinco De Mayo"

Oh yea, It is hard maple and is about half finished with two coats of polyurethane. Will do some more filling, sanding and at least wipe on another two coats of poly. :)
I need to start the arm rests now.
In the photos, there are 38 pieces glued up and now I need to add 4 more!!!!
Another thing, I wanted to get the darn thing out of my shop for awhile so, I ask Goodoldwhatshername if I could put it in the "office" for awhile.....OH NO!! IT GOES IN THE LIVING ROOM!!!........Women!!!! it isn't finished yet..

That is a beautiful chair. The fact that the "boss" wants to put it in the living room is a great compliment. Little does she know how much better it will look with a another few coats of finish.

Well not bad for the first one. I'm sure they will get better after 2 or 3.

Linda said good job and fortunately didn't say that I could make one for her.

Looks great Roger - that's a challenging project! Please post some more
pictures of the arm attachment process. That rocker will look wonderful in your living room.

You'll need those arm rests to pull yourself out with.

Very nice rocker! Where did you buy the plans from?

Thanks!

Lawerence, really. The beer bottle is for scale!

Rog! That's a honey of a rocking chair. The real down side I can see is it doesn't have a twin you can sit in while watching the finish cure on the other one.

I'll hoist one in your honor.

Little bear will be proud of you Roger!

Well done, however if you did some proper measuring and added a few attachments you would be able to have sip at every rocking motion and not have to hold the beer!! Oh I forgot the beer was only for perspective!!

Fantastic piece of work RR!

Eric

That deserves a beer!

I love the way the curves come together on that chair....

Well, thanks for all the nice complements everyone! :-D
I think you need to see it in person and as a wood worker look at all the mistakes before getting too excited about it!

Francois, Please contact Little Bear about owning one of these for yourself. He has made several of them and has all the tricks down that I am just learning.

Ed, I got the plans from "American Furniture Co.". The plans are for the "Del Cover Rocking Chair". They are full scale with a book of assembly directions and cost $20.00. This is the first time I have ever paid for plans on anything or even atempted anything of this type.

I would like to make one or two more out of cherry wood for our children but, I'm not sure that I ready for another one yet!
I sure have learned alot so far (I haven't started the arm rests yet) and I have a few ideas on how to make it somewhat easier in the future. I made hard board templets for all the major pieces when I started but I think I will have to remake some of them for some changes I feel would make the job easier in the future.
It is a very comfortable sitting chair, which supprised me, and considering the slats are only 1/4" thick, it is very stable also. :-D Well as you know, it held my 210 lb butt off the floor!!
It sure will give you practice making M&T joints both hand cut and machine cut. There are eight M&T joints in the side frames (hand cut) and six for the cross pieces at the top and lower front and back (router cut) and then the 54 router cut "slots" for the slats!!
It is definetly NOT a weekend project!

Thanks again for the pats on the back. I dont know how meny times I said to Mo, "What in the he_ _ made me think I could build a rocking chair???"

Rog

PS....The beer is there for DRINKING!!!!!!! silly gooses.......

Roger,

I don't think you were off your "Rocker" in deciding to build one, chairs in general are challenging and I have never built one. I'm going to look into the web site and see about buying a set of plans for myself. So about how many hours do you have building yours and about how many board feet of lumber?

Thanks!
Ed
