I've got a stationary belt/disk sander that's driving me nuts. The belts that is.

Is there any brand of belt on the market that doesn't have a speed bump at the joint? I realize that one shouldn't put a lot of pressure on the belt when sanding but if I even so much as go beyond just letting the wind from the belt touch the workpiece I get an obnoxious 'bump-bump-bump' from the joint.

Klingspor is, as I understand, a good source for abrasives. Anyone know if their belts are smooth?

The belt on my belt sander is a Klingspor. I never noticed any bumping when I'm sanding. Also the Klingspor belt seems to track better than the others.

Hope this helps,
-Joe

2 votes for Klingspor. Been using for several years - no bumps. http://www.woodworkingshop.com/

Most belts today are butt-joined with tape backing. Makes an extremely modest bump if you're pressing, but nothing near the old overlap type, which was, of course directional.

I like Klingspor.

Thanks for the replies and the Klingspor endorsements. Off to their web site to do some shopping.

Dennis, count me in on Klingspor as well. I've used them for years and never had any issues with bumps on my belts.

Just a though, but I have been down that bumpy road id I put the belt on backwards. Some belts still require you to put them on in the direction of the arrow that may be printed on the backing. I put one on wrong a year ago and it did the same thing.

I usually pay attention to stuff like that, Splintered, but with some of the dumb things I've done the past few weeks it's entirely possible I got the belt running backwards.

Thanks for the reminder.
