That's like, way too colorful.

How about "Brian Black"? :D

This is an end table I finally finished for my parents. The base is ash painted black and the top is cherry with a few gel stains (mahogany, nutmeg) with a satin Arm-R-Seal top coat.

I take very little credit for the design. I made this to match their existing Ethan Allen coffee table and small triangular table. My mom was using a TV tray as an end table on her side of the couch. I told her I could make something that matched the rest of their furniture. All the sizes/dimensions were taken from their other table. I only made the top apron a little bigger so I could accommodate a drawer.

Image

It's fairly small . . . the top is about 14" x 24" . . . just a nice little table for the end of the couch.

There were a couple "firsts" for me. First time using dowels. I used them to attach the slats to the shelf and apron. While I would love to have an accurate doweling jig, I went with a very cheap one, and it worked fairly well.

First time trying that type of drawer slide. It went ok, until I tried the final fit of the drawer. After an hour and a half of wrestling with it, I finally realized my runners were a little thick on one end. Now it slides very smoothly.

And for the first time, I tracked all my time spent, from design, to buying lumber to final finishing and fitting. Total time . . . . 26 hours!

Here was my Sketchup plan:

Next up, a baby gate and a piano bench for some friends. Then it's on to building a bed for my 2 year old, and then a changing table for my (just found out yesterday) daughter coming in September!

Hey!!! As you know, I'm a big fan of "Larry Green" but, ya know, I really like that "Brian Black" also. :-D
That little table looks very good! :-D I really like the contrast with the cherry top.
It's kinda funny, I was working with some maple the otherday, and a friend ask what finish I would be using on it. I told him that I was thinking of rude&crude BLACK! He just laughed. I cant wait for him to come over next time and I will show him your pictures! :D I'm sure he will be very impressed and not laugh at your table! :-D

Well first let me offer my congratulations on the new Addition to your family.

Great work on the table. I'm not one for stains or paints but if you're matching other pieces I guess your hands are tied. It looks great, esepcially the way the grain of the ash shows through. Really great work!

Thanks, and I agree about the stains and paints. I actually intended to get maple as the base wood since you couldn't really see any grain on the existing pieces. But I got talked into ash, and as it turns out, I kind of like seeing the grain. It matches the other pieces but stands out as it's own at the same time.

Good looking table, but who's the little guy peaking out of the drawer?

That's me. A friend of mine did a hand carved rubber stamp of me. I use it as my "signature". I put it on that side of the drawer so every time my mom opens it, she's sees my pretty face. :P

Here's a closer shot on another piece:

And thanks all for the congrats. We're having those "are we crazy for having 2 kids" moments. But so many have done it, we're not worried. We are worried about karma. Our son has been so awesome, slept through the night at 5 weeks . . . even now tells us it's bed time, goes down easily. We figure the second will be a terror, just to keep the balance in the universe. :D

First....CONGRATS, DADDY!!!! Make sure you put some tools in her hands, too. We females can like sawdust, too

Secondly....awesome table!!! Great construction, great plan to a great finished project, and I do like the Brian Black. It definitely makes the piece.
