What kind of clear finish can I put over latex paint? The finish isn't quite as "shiny" as the client wanted. Any time frame for how long to wait before applying the clear finish?

Thanks

Water based poly, or water base lacquer. Larry uses Target coatings Water based lacquer and has had great success.

Target also makes a poly specifically designed to go over paint.

I have used polycrylics water based poly as well as lots of oil based poly.

With oil poly you get a yellowing effect that may not be desired. No yellowing with the water based varieties.

Good luck,
Darryl

Good to hear. I have some Polycrylic at home, so I'm covered there. Do you have to wait any longer than you would to put a 2nd coat of paint on?

Thanks

I think with all my stuff, I usually wait 24 hours. It helps if it is cured a bit.

The thing about latex on latex is that the paint bonds to the previous coat. With poly it is a surface finish and "tooth" is always good. Meaning a sanding of the previous coat to get the poly to bond is sometimes necessary. I have done it both ways and have had great results.

I did my daughter's furniture 7 years ago with paint and WB poly and it is unbelievable how durable it has been. You know kids!

Hope this helps,
Darryl

I used oil based poly on some child's furniture I made for last Christmas. 2 coats and it is holding up great.

Sanded the WB paint, after letting it cure for a day or two, applied two coats of poly, sanded between coats.
