Boy, did I screw up! My cyclone sounded like it was "Laboring", and I had no idea what the problem was. I emptied the drum and reached up into the cyclone and didn't feel anything wrong. Next, I took the pan off the bottom of the filter that is supposed to collect only the really fine dust. It was packed with sawdust that went up into the filter. I reached up into the filter and it, too, was packed full of sawdust and shavings. I took the filter off and took it outside and proceeded to vacuum it out. 2 big plastic bags later I was done.

I'm assuming it filled up because there were times when I didn't empty the canister soon enough. I'll have to be more dilligent in that job.

Yep! I have the same collector and that has happened on a couple occasions. It is hard to believe how mush those pleats can hold.

Hey Larry,

I've done that too, so I feel you're pain bro. Unfortunately, I'm not smart enough to have only done it once. But I do my best not to do it again. I have a 3hp Onieda cyclone and it holds an enormous amount of accumulated dust and chips when it gets jammed up. And boy, is it ever a chore to clean up! It took four 55 gallon drum liners, and all day, both times.

I have found a schematic for an early warning device for the drum, but I haven't found time to build it yet. It uses a small fan that runs in the drum. When the fan is stalled by the chips it senses the increased amperage, and triggers an alarm. If I ever get around to building it, I'll post some pictures of it.

Tom

I have nothing as big as the Pratt and Whitney dust collectors that you're talking about :D but I find my filters pleats keep getting clogged up so I finally put a reminder in my calendar program and I just vacuum it out every couple of months. Works for me...

Hey PK,

While my cyclone is somewhat large, it's still a far cry from anything that P&W would put out. For those of you unfamiliar with Pratt and Whitney Reliable Aircraft Engines™, they power most of the small airliners and fighter jets manufactured in this country. But what they are most famous for is this.:D

Well Larry it's time for a little spring cleaning.
And don't forget that "Jet" over your head (Tom reminded me).
