...I came across a new term to me. Last time I was wondering around Buck House, Sorry I mean Buckingham Palace, during an invite to one of Liz's, sorry I mean The Queen's get togethers in the garden, I noticed a concealed door flush with the wall, a sort of secret door. Until today I did not realise that this sort of door has a name - It's called a jib door. See, you can learn something every day!

Hey Ralph,

Oh great! You just drop that on us with no further explanation, like it was all so self explanatory. What is the origin of the name, "jib"? The only jib that I know of is a fore and aft sail, on a boat.

Tom

Tom,

Jib on a boat also on a crane, I understand but I had not heard of a jib door before or the use of the word in this context. I know no more, that's why I posted it here and not in the puzzler hoping someone might enlighten me.

I'll have a word with Liz next time I pop in for tea :D

I believe it was named for a Mr. Jib, who frequented the house but did not wish to be seen entering or leaving. :-D

Actually, tho here's some info and a pic: http://thepeakofchic.blogspot.com/2007/ ... -door.html

Btw, the White House also has a Jib door in the "Blue" Room. You just can't make this stuff up.
