This is a reproduction of what Horner's Blue Book calls the "Best American Queen Anne chair yet found." It's a transitional piece as the overall shape is Queen Anne yet it's embellished with Chippendale carving. 4 of a set of at least 6 of the originals are known to exist and the latest went to auction in 2003 for a final closing price of $679,500...ouch!

My version is from mahogany as was the original. It's a start-to-finish neanderthal effort with the exception of roughing out the blanks on a bandsaw. The finish is primarily dye and shellac, but pigments were also used to make the piece look old.

For those that like seeing the process from bare wood to finished piece, there's a short youtube video available at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k9IgXEfPCG0

Below are a few pictures of the finished piece. Detailed images are available in the photo album here on WWA.

WOW!! Very nice!

I figured you used a CNC machine until you said it was a Neanderthal effort.

That is beautiful work! The originals could not have been any better. I would like more progress details and will check the video. A very impressive job, indeed.

Thanks for the kind words everyone. It was a fun chair to build.

Lawrence, I do enjoy taking good records of my time on projects...this one has about 150 hours into it including finishing and ~$400 worth of materials and upholstery labor. Not cheap, but then again, not something you can pick up at the local Pottery Barn.

James, yes I do some teaching...time to get those gouges dusted off!

Jess, let me know if the video omits something you are interested in during the build. It's documented thoroughly....only a portion of the photos made it into the youtube slide show.

Beautiful work, Joel. Your craftsmanship is an inspiration. Thanks for the detailed record.

I'm curious, is this going to be a solo run or have you thought about completeing the set?

Hi Joe,

My wife would love a set of 6 plus two armchairs, but that's not going to happen for a while given everything else going on. I did enjoy this though and look forward to making an armchair version one day.
