How's this for a sophisticated jig? I have a shop full of jigs and cramps but you can't beat a few nails, rubber bands and some heavy boxes 8)

I'm sure the top of your press is laminate or suitably waxed?

Properly located wedges or a Spanish windlass are great ways to bring things together.
