Since I can not buy 1/16" x 105" bandsaw blades I'm looking into making my own??
I see two brazing kit are available; Woodcraft and Sure Splice use silver solder to braze the blades together. Has anyone had any experience with either of these. I called 4 local bandsaw welding companys and none would do any thing less than 1/4"?
Has anyone welded blades this narrow??
I have found 2 companies that sell 1/16" blade coils.

Appreciate any advice
Bill

Hey Bill,

I've never done it myself, but Pop used to braze his band saw blades. He had a jig to hold them into proper position during the operation.

Hey guys, the daily URL had a great link a week or so back about brazing your own blades it is worth a visit. Wait a bit Ill go find it, so that Chuck will realize we are appreciating his hard work!

THis is the link I found on the page that Chuck put on the daily URL

http://www.laymar-crafts.co.uk/tip49.htm

Makes me want to buy a roll of bandsaw blade, but I haven't yet.

I havent got the great jig that was shown in post before. Even so I have brazed a few blades together. I changed bandsaw and had 20 blades that didnt fit my new saw. So I cut them and brazed longer ones together.
I strongly advice you to make/buy a jig to hold blades when brazing. I put two clamps in a vice. It worked but was very fiddely. When brazing thin blades (1/4´) make sure not to warm it too much.
I brazed it with silver solder of 600 degrees C and a gasweld with 150 ltres nozzle.

Thank you for the webpage with blueprint for a jig.
I made one today. As you can see Im not a skilled welder... but anyway... function before beauty...
Now I only have to order a cassette of band saw blade....

The reason most places won't weld blades that narrow is welds must be annealed after welding and their equipment just isn't sensitive enough for most of their operators. ( I worked in tool and die work for many years and we welded all of our blades. And I had to weld the thinner blades on the low anneal setting. and then anneal the blades with a torch. Most operators don't really have the knowledge to do this properly. ). Brazing uses lower temperatures and doesn't hjave to be annealed afterward.

The 2 companies that listed 1/16" coils no longer carry them.

Sears still sells 1/16' wide blades in the 80' length for their discontinued 12" bandsaws. I recently bought 4 and am trying to have three 105: blades silver soldered. Scheduled to pick them up tomorrow. Hopeully will have some success; if not I'll try to silver solder myself. Lee Valley and Woodcraft sell fixtures to hold the blades.

My other option is to buy a discontinued Craftsman 12" bandsaw; there are several locally for $100 to $150.

good luck to all

Bill

I have a Craftsman 12" bandsaw that's available. If you don't have any luck finding one over there, send me a PM.

I did find this sight when I was looking for bulk blade rolls.

http://www.doallsawing.com/products_det ... t=DOALL036

they do show 1/16th inch blade although I have not spoken to them.
Good Luck
Pat

Money is always an issue, but you might be better off saving up for a 14" or bigger saw. Better blade availability, better capability, etc.

Your are The Man!
DoAll does sell 1/16" bandsaw blade coils AND they will weld them to size.
I ordered five 1/16" - 105" blades at $19 each.
After searching everywhere for the last 2 months - Bingo! thanks to your find!
This is indeed a great forum!
Thanks again
