Hey all I was just reading a book review
about Civil War Woodworking (books got the same
title!) and I noticed that the Author is AJ Hamler,
who posts here.

Looks like a great book. Congratulations AJ, hope
you have a best seller on your hands!

I've got no affiliation with this other then the WWA.
Just thought people would be interested

Great going AJ, I'll have to keep an eye out for that.

I saw that review in a mag recently too and thought it was one to add to the reading list. I have no clue if the author is the same one that did a copy of Grant's travelling desk that was in another mag several years ago (maybe fine woodworking) but I'll have to look it up-- at any rate it is on my "to buy" list. I'll also have to put in a request with my library as they will usually buy the book and then many folks can enjoy it.

Lawrence

ps- on sale at amazon right now- list $24.95 and it is $16.47

I have it. It's a very interesting book. And a number of the projects are useful items whether you are a Civil War reenactor or not.
By the way, AJ is already working on Volume 2.

Thanks, guys! The book was a lot of fun to do, and although it's only been out a little more than a month it seems to be doing well.

No, Lawrence, I'm not the same guy who did the Grant desk you're thinking of (if you remember where that was, btw, let me know; I'd like to look it up). However, I do have an officer's field desk project in the book:

Image

Although I use all modern shop tools for the projects, one of the things I did in the book was to make some items in the same manner as they would would have done back then, such as taking an existing item and using it as the basis for another. For example, this field desk project shown above started life as another project in the book, a pine hardtack crate.

Image

There are a number of historical samples of field desks being made from hardtack crates, and this is my attempt to re-create one. In the new second volume -- which, as Lee pointed out, I'm already working on -- I'm doing a more formal field desk in solid cherry.
