Any suggestions on a book for a novice carver?

I agree with TT's questions.

However, if you want to get into chip carving here's a book I used:

Chip Carving
Techniques & Patterns
By Wayne Barton

ISBN - 0-8069-7924-0

Also

Chip Carving
Design and Pattern Sourcebook
By Wayne Barton
ISBN -0-8069-4403-X

Decorative Woodcarving by Jeremy Williams is a good one.

http://www.amazon.com/Decorative-Woodca ... 857&sr=1-2

Lots of info on proper tools and techniques.

http://norahall.com/

She's a traditional carver, as was my teacher, so I like her methods.

The general (and specific project books) by Rick Butz are pretty good, too. http://www.bookfinder.com/author/rick-butz/
