Well, I have commented on the fact that I have been working on a Proto-type music stand.
It is for a young teenage singing trio. They sing and play primaraly Christan music.
Their mother bought a cross from me at the Flea Market and they were so taken with the design that they desided they wanted me to incorprate the design in their music stand.
I have just got it assembled and havent put any finish on it yet. (waiting on aproval and stain color decision. It is made with oak plywood and I used iron-on edge banding. (Well, actually, I'm not done with that either! Lowes was out of oak banding today!  )
Anyway, here it is....

Need some suggestions and opinions on the mechanics of the tilt table. They didn't want it adjustable in height but, I could use some ideas for that too if you have any. :-D
Oh yea, the base comes apart too. The 1/4" dowell pin in the corner holds it all together

Rog -

Lemme be the first to say that your prototype is pretty danged good to begin with. From the top picture, I had a question about stability (it's so tall and narrow), but the back side one works.

Is is primarily for choral music or instrumental? Singers typically stand up and want the music higher so their voice projects better. Instrument players may play standing or seated... so you might have some issues building the everything for everyone stand...

Is there anyway you could use two dowels in those grooves? One close to the top of the stand and the bottom one just as you have it. This way, both can snap into the stand at several different points, adjusting height and angle...

Great design! It looks pretty stable and I really like the tilt mechanisum. Great work there. About the only thing I'd think about changing would be to cut the piano wire hinge where it shows through the letters. It's highly reflective and in bright lights can detract from the looks. I'd also paint the underside of the top and it's support elements a flat black. Doing this could really pop out the front and make it much more dramatic and readable.

Thanks for all the nice comments guys! (and you are quick too!! )
Tom, I'm not quite sure about your idea as I would have to make the lower leg in two pices for adjustment but, it might not be as noticable as I think. They are gituar players and singers so they stand during the preformances but, I too wanted to make it for someone that may be sitting. I'll work on that.

Ice, it is fairly stable but, I really don't like the base but, I need the weight of the larger pieces. And yet it needs to break down for transportation also. It measures 4'-0" tall and 2'-0" wide
I planed on painting the exposed parts of the hinge black and the underside and support black too. But when I suggested that to a friend, I thought he was going to have a cat! :D I think that I will do it anyway because I want the three D look of the cross standing out.
Anyway, thanks for the comments and approval. :-D

I sure hope so because if they are a Jewish group you probably will lose the commission with this one... :D

Very nice looking piece--

ps- evidently you can make your own iron on edgebanding with Titebond... haven't tried it yet though, just an idea

Again, nice job

RR, that is super! I love the design.

A suggestion, if you want to reduce the top weight, you might replace the music holder with a sheet of 1/4 ply and edge it with some solid wood to
keep it rigid.

When I opened this post and saw the stand I thought wow that looks great, ..................Then I saw the base. And I am glad you posted this first "I really don't like the base but" or I would not have said anything. Perhaps you can do some scroll sawing of the base to make it less bulky looking. Shorten the tall leg some and attach it directly to the stands
upright removing that piece in between, and maybe something other than the big radii as you have no radii eswhere on the piece.
Sorry.

Update......
The owner of the music stand came and picked it up this afternoon. He seemed to like it and hauled it off anyway. :D

Even the back side.

Now if he just comes back with the money, we will all be happy. :D
