Well, I got my first couple of vacuum pressed 48x15 pieces done over the last couple of days-- cut myself a nice new piece of 120 grit paper for my performax drum sander, sanded one side nicely, flipped the piece, started sanding the other side...and got a torn/rolled under feeder belt.

This lifted the inboard side up about 1/16 of an inch which made the sandpaper blow through the workpiece and burned the nice new sandpaper along one side so badly I'm afraid it is (literally) toast

I guess I'll be ordering another feeder belt and changing it out before I progress....

Good thing this is a hobby, because it took 5 seconds to ruin hours of work and $50+ worth of belt and sandpaper

I am going to ask a question...

Are you running them through the sander to thickness them, or to just get them smooth?

The reason I ask is because if you are making your own veneer you could do all the drum sanding on the veneer first, and then vacuum press it to the panel.

I like to drum sand first, then edge glue them together, then scrape any glue, then press them to the panel. There is less risk of ruining the panel near the finish line.
Just asking, maybe you are doing something totally different than I think.

Good luck,
Darryl

Sorry for the mishap. That's when I kill the lights and say
It's 5 o'clock somewhere and grab a cold brew.

sounds like when I learned about glue blead through (before I learned about wax paper ) I glued a whole stack of drawer fronts together trying to clamp them all at once :(

Oh the joy

Sounds like a rough day and a good one to step back from. Learn from it and press on though, is the best you can do.
