I finally got some time to work on a Craftsman coffee table that LOML wants to go with the end tables I made for the living room. Seems like this has taken forever. Actually, it has :-D . I got back in the shop today, finished the M&T joints and did a dry fit. Spent the rest of the afternoon working on spindles. I'm so sick of spindles... The wood is Lyptus and it will be stained mahogany. LOML gets to pick the color and I get to build them.

Zulu - you said a mouthful. I spend a lot of time sharpening router bits. You also can't drill the usual size pilot holes for a screw because you'll break the screw - DAMHIKT. It's also brittle. LOML dropped a cutting Lyptus cutting board and it cracked, big time. That said, I like the way it looks and LOML likes it because it is "sustainable". I would say its "somewhat sustainable" but if LOML is happy, I'm happy.

Yup, it's hard all right, but after a finish you can't tell the grain from mahog (at least I had a hard time the last time I used it) and at half the price.... nice job

That's what started me using it. We have a 1920's vintage dining room table that's made of ribbon cut mahogany and LOML wanted these other pieces to match it. Someone at Woodcraft suggested Lyptus and I really liked it. It looks great finished naturally as well.

When I first used lyptus I was quite supprised to see smoke coming out of the holes I was drilling in it.
I made a rocking horse. It turned out looking real good.

Great beginning there PK. Lyptus sounds and looks good. I'd love to try it some time but SWMBO wants eveything out of red oak

For reasons that I don't understand my PM and emails do not seem to be reaching you.

Progress continues on the coffee table and the boat. Went to the yard today and saw the patient in surgery. More photos in the blog. Meanwhile I did the glue-up of the top for the coffee table. This is the biggest glue-up I've ever done. That's really not saying a lot given some of the dining room tables I've seen here but it was new for me. Turned out OK so far. Here is the result after sanding but before beveling and chamfering.

Very nice-- I like your grain matching for the cathedral patterns... that's going to really pop nicely.

How are you going to attach the top? Evidently lyptus can move quite a bit and I'd hate to see your beautiful work stress fracture.

Thanks for sharing
Lawrence

I was planning on using figure 8 fasteners. That's what I did on the two end tables and it has worked well in this humid environment. I've never done a piece this wide so I hope it works for this as well. Any advice is welcomed.

The wood is killer, great choice.
