OK, I need some help here.

Someone gave me a gift card to Woodcraft and I struggling to figure out how to spend it.

The gift card has $150 on it. Turns out the same person gave me $100 cash for Christmas. However, I blew that money on beer or nurses or something else foolish. That said to say I'd feel compelled to supplement the gift card making a potential total of $250.

Some thoughts include:
- Earlex HVLP
- Biscuit joiner (yes, I have no shame)
- Right handed smoke bender
- Mortiser (Steel City??)
- More chisels!!
- JessEm Pocket Zip Slot Mortise Mill
- Patriot Paint Ball System to detect & paint bratty neighbor kids

So what do you think? Any favorites? Anything I should add to my list??

A smoke bender was my quest one evening as a boy scout. I think there is a fairly high probability that it doesn't exist . .. and someone won a bet that evening.

Rockfish....you seem to use a lot of chisels and planes. Why not go ahead and spend it on a set of chisels or a plane that you would not normally buy for yourself. Treat yourself!!!

I don't use my mortiser (Delta) constantly but when I need it ... it sure makes life simpler. It's set up right now making mortises for my current 'school' project. As for brand ... never met anyone with one that wished they had gotten the other brand. The school I'm attending has one of each sitting side by side and, if there is a deciding difference, I can't find it.
And ..... it always gives me a chance to use my favorite LN Chisels to clean everything up.
OR >>>>> CLAMPS Always hard for me to part with my own $ for clamps ... but if it's a 'gimme' I will grab all I can.
good luck,
Don

Verna - thanks for your perspective. You are right. The only problem is WC doesn't have any planes I'm interested in.

The next planes I want are:

There is a chance WC carries the last one, but I don't think they carry any of the others.

I was really thinking about chisels, however, that is more chisels to sharpen . ... and all of the ones I have are not sharp as it is.

There are days I really wish I had a biscuit joiner for gluing up panels. Seems like it would make aligning the panel in the clamps a lot easier. Any thoughts??

Rock you might look at getting this attachment for your router for cutting biscuit slots. I have one and it works pretty well. Not as good as a dedicated tool, but satisfactory for the occasional use. Also cheaper. :)

I'd go with the Morticer. Or at least some morticing chisels.

Biscuit joiner. They're quick and easy to use. Flatten any flaws in the stock (thickness or slight warp) and make glue up stress free. It's the third major tool I bought years ago and it sure helps.

'Course, right after that I bought the mortiser and have found some interesting uses for it other that the design for square holes.

Both sure are handy.

Oh, I've already got a Tennessee Smoke Grinder so I've never felt the need for a bender.

Eric, since you live at the bottom of the world where there isn't enough smoke you probably don't know what that is, you all may have a different version, however. Do nothing machine. Looks sorta like one of those tools you use to draw or cut an elipse.

There are days when mine gets a real work out.

If you get the right-handed smoke bender, you'll have to get the matching left-handed wind shifter! Were we in Scouts together? ;-)

I like biscuits for attaching face frames myself. My DeWalt biscuit joiner has served me well for several years.

If your chisels aren't sharp, it must be because you need a Tormek. 8)

At the end of the day, make sure that whatever you pick up makes you smile because you're glad you got it.

Tools are easy to come by.

Why not increase your skill level?

Take a class and learn something new; or better your current skillset:

Sharpening? Turning? Veneering? Perhaps?

I have a work-sharp that I got for back grinding. However, I do all my final sharpening on stones and a strop.

Biscuit joiner is very tempting.

my vote is for a tool that will last for a lifetime (I love my earlex, but in other words, not the earlex or biscuit joiner) so that you will think of the giver when you use the tool in 40 years (like I said, I love my earlex, but I don't expect it to be around in 40 years)

In that case I vote for some REALLY nice chisels and a book or two or a nice "lifetime" layout tool (like a starrett combination square etc.)

just methoughts....

Ah Tampa San,

I perceive that you are on the path toward enlightenment. Please tell us of your epiphany. Oh, and NPDH.

Alas, Seattle San, those are just a vision in my mind's eye now, until the most honorable SWMBO is convinced they are a good purchase...
