I finally managed to get some shop time this weekend and did some work on some boxes that have been in progress for a couple of months now. While bevel cutting some long strips of Tiger Maple, I managed to scorch the bevel pretty badly. I started to breakout the sander, but in light of now having a really nice Jointer Plane I thought I'd plane the area to keep all the edges nice and crisp.

As most of you know, my shop is pretty small and my work bench sets in a small alcove. This works great for working on small short pieces but I just don't have the space available to hand plane long stock, especially with a long jointer plane.

I often cover the top of my TS with a large piece of 3/4" MDF to use it for assembly or sanding, but every time I've tried planning on it, the whole piece would slide across the TS, being that I keep it well waxed. :-? Then I thought about a small bench hook I'd made a while back while working on some small pieces, and thought, 'why not up scale that puppy.

So, I glued on a piece of 3/4 scrap to the bottom of the right edge, and a piece of 1/4" oak along the top left edge and a piece of 1/4" ply along the front edge.

Now I have a really big bench hook I can plane against.

Granted, there is no vise or bench dogs, but it works well enough. I'm going to work on a vise and dogs for it.

Here's the piece before planing, note the piece is beveled on both sides so I kept the waste pieces to prop up the work piece level.

And after planing, did I mention that I really love my new Veritas bevel up Jointer plane?

I also bought one last plane for now. Wood River #5 Jack.

Not as smooth as the Veritas but I love the side realestate for shooting. Now I just need to make some shooting boards and plane cradles for them all.

These are my Go-To planes:

L-R: Veritas Bevel-Up Jointer, Woodriver #6, Woodriver #5, Stanley #4, Stanley #60 and #62 Block planes.

These should do me for a good while.

Those bevel-up designs are great on nasty wood, aren't they? Sort of goes against what most people preach, which is a high sharpness angle ("York pitch") for an instant shaving roll.

Not sure if it's better and finer stones which produce a fine edge, or the adjustable throat that makes it so. Envy the Veritas jointer. I use my 7C or the old transitional and follow with the LN low-angle smooth, which gets there in two stages versus one.

Double-thick your MDF/MDO (I like MDO) and make your hook to clamp in your Workmate. I just rest one foot on the base for stability and it seems to work fine.

Thanks guys. Yeah it's pretty heavy, but I've yet to come up with anything better, and I'm out of cieling space to raise it with a winch.

I thought I'd plane the area to keep all the edges nice and crisp.

And what an excellent thought it was!

I use my TS less for cutting than so many other operations.

Makes a great shooting board (complete with adjustable fence :D ):

WOW, Great idea Dan. I'll have to give that a shot, so to speak.

Frank,
You have gone off the deep end of the pool. Aurora doesn't have enough air space for all your planes. I run a redistribution program and all individuals are paired with caring families. Currently I have a backlog, but your planes will be housed safely on Florence St., used only as needed.

F.O.B. accepted. Only because I care.

If I dont remember wrongly, wasnt it that the way it all started at the Roman times. A workbench with two rows of holed in, for thick pegs. Then the workpiece was fastenend with wedges between the pegs.
At least I think I remember it rightly.

They've commercialized the ancient concept. I have these on my wish list at LV. Hope the wife and kids can come up with more than a card in June. http://www.leevalley.com/wood/page.aspx ... at=1,41637

Thanks for the comments. Ed, I may have a couple I'm not using regularly.

So Frank... you did pull the trigger on the Veritas bevel up after all...

Nice collection of planes you have there! The improvement on the planed board is eye opening!

Yeah Tom, I pulled the trigger on that a month or so ago. It's by far the nicest plane I own now. I just love it to death. 8)
