When making cauls for glue ups, (this one would be for about an 18" width)
what is the curvature on the one side and what type of wood should I use? I have access to plenty of pallet wood.
Thanks,
Pat

Pallet wood will be fine. To keep them from getting glued to the workpiece use plastic packaging tape on the side that will contact the workpiece.

Nor sure what you mean by curvature, but I use any scrapwood I can find, along with as many clamps I think necessary.

the curve is to make sure that the center gets as much pressure as the clamped ends

no affiliation, but it's on my short list to buy, thought I'd point it out as an option.

those cauls look like all the things I used to take off my jointer before I tuned it up ;) -- here I thought I was making firewood but it turns out they were "cauls"

Seriously though, my suggestion is to not think too much about it and try it out. If it is only palletwood you arn't losing much and your senses should tell you if you are getting pressure all over the piece (equal squeeze out, it just "feels" right, etc)

Good luck, and we'd love to see pics of what you come up with

Lawrence

ps- I've seen some nice palletwood though-- just lots of holes. We'd love to see pics of what you come up with there as well

Lawrence

I won't be throwing my regular cauls that I use to hold pieces in alignment when I clamp up panels but I did recently look at the Bowclamp cauls. Applying CNC technology to making the all-important arc seems to have paid off. I was very surprised at how well they work.
