My first attempt at one of these boards and had a problem during glue up resulting in a couple of gaps. I bought some Behlens salad bowl finish hoping that would seal them like varnish ..........well after applying 5 coats and sanding them all off this finish will not go in the gaps like varnish will.

Even after dabbing the gap trying to push it in notta. Can this stuff be thinned the can has limited info like it's made by a small operation. Anybody ever used this product.

The gaps by the way are due to not installing clamps in the third axis and it bowed, yea well so much for A's in shop class 30 years ago! #2 will be easier right.

Thanks,
pine

Might be a little late now, because of the oil in the gaps, but you could mix up a thinned batch of yellow glue with fine sawdust and force it in with a putty knife. Might help some.

In my personal opinion you do not want gaps in a cutting board.
Leaves too much room for waste to accumulate.

Well, depending on your definition of "gap". :D

I would rip the board along those glue lines where the gaps are and re-glue.

Attempting to fill the gaps with glue (or finish) is an awkward solution at best.

"Salad Bowl Finish" is a wiping varnish and due to its high volume of oil to resin ratio will not 'build' like traditional varnishes. It simply isn't meant to do so.

Thanks to all of you for your input, the next one won't have any gaps and yes it was a learning process.

you always have options modifications design corrections

HIDE THE BOO BOO

set up your router table or table saw to route through the entire board at all the intersections or as creatively as needed to remove hide correct modify the BOO BOO and place a contrasting wood in the routed area.

you end up with tight joints and an artistic cutting board hard to duplicate :D
