Hey Everyone,
I am looking for unfinished Walnut finials for a high post bed I am building. I have searched and searched and am about ready to go buy a lathe. Thanks in advance.

You may end up buying a lathe or perhaps one of the turners here can make you some. Plenty of metal, oak, and generic "wood" ones are available, but walnut is rare for these. Occasionally you can find some odd ones at antique shops.

Davis,

You are smack dab in the middle of turning country. :-)

There is a chapter in Greensboro here is a link to the chapter listings of the AAW.

American Association of Woodturners.

Contact the local chapter for turning. They might even be able to hook you up with a good deal on a good used lathe.

Good Luck,

There has got to be some wood turners in your area that would do the job. I have a niece that damaged a bed and broke two finials and wondered if I could help. I don't have any turning equipment so I went to a small commercial cabinet shop and was told he didn't do turnings either but told me where this old guy was that would do it. I went to his place way out in the middle of nowhere and his machinery was pretty much all hand made by him, even the wheels on his band saw he made himself out of wood. Asked him about the finials and he said sure and turned them out mostly by eye and charged me $20 each. Well worth it.

Did you inquire at Adam's Wood Products?

Osborne Wood Products has some finials and they offer them in walnut. Not sure how fancy you need them to be, but check out their site. They also do custom orders, so they could probably do something fancier, if that's what you need.

Here is the link

No affiliation and have never ordered anything from them, but I saw their ad in Woodshop News

Mr. Eastman at Roy's Wood Products told me "If you can draw it, I can make it".
