Saw Jamie's mention of Evapo-Rust in this thread.

http://www.woodworking.org/InfoExchange ... highlight=

Well I got a gallon of it and put it to use.

Here is a shot of a plane I bought for $2.

And after some time in the bath, this is what came out. :D :D :D

BTW I didn't put the iron in, this was just a test.

Image

And the japanning, at least the japanning that was there, was not touched.

Image

This was rusted so bad I had to pry it out. Now it slides freely

Turns out it's a Millers Falls #16.

Now to flatten the sole and sharpen the iron. :D :D :D

Funny story there, I set every thing up in the shop last night read the directions put everything in and then saw a note in the bottom right corner of the jug.

Cold slows the process, heat increased the process and use at 60* or higher. I look over at the thermometer and it reads 50*. :D

So I turned out the lights and went to bed. Got up in the morning and took it out. Total time in the bath was 10 hours, but I think it would have been less in warmer weather. :-?

Lawrence

Looks like some very good stuff. I will keep that in mind for any projects that come my way and need cleaning.

Thanks.

Thanks for the pictures Jeff.
The only pictures I've seen were on Evapo-Rust web site.

I have been think'n about this stuff since Jamie
posted about it a long time ago.

I'll be going to Auto Zone to see what I can get, Larry.
AZ is the major retailer in the states.

I went here.

http://www.evaporust.com/evaporust.html

$21 a gallon plus $10.10 for shipping. Ordered it on Wed. and it got there on Monday.

I think I'm going to need another gallon. I have an old Stalnely #6 and as big as it is I'm going to need a larger container, hence more fluid. Maybe I could create a container with a sheet of plastic.

Hey Bob,

Are you saying the Auto Zone carries Evapo-Rust in the stores? I'll have to see if there is one around here, thanks. :-D

Jeff, isn't it great?! You must have seen my Inca saw restoration thread. EvapoRust made that project a relative piece of cake.

the AutoZone stuff is going to be really expensive, I suspect, because I think they only carry it in quarts. You can shop around the internet, there are varying prices, if memory serves. I bought a 10 gallon container from a local "distributor" who was retiring.

Remember, you can use it over and over again until it simply quits working. Yes, you can make a trough and line it with sheet plastic for those long items that need to be soaked.

Congrats!!! (Oh, also, if the item has aluminum on it, it's ok to put that in -- I didn't need to take apart the combo-metal items from the Inca, just stick the whole thing in)

Good info on the aluminum. I was wondering about that.

I think I did pretty good on the price. Total was $31.10 for a gal.

If you look around on their web site, probably an FAQ page, they tell you what metals are OK. I think perhaps copper was not OK, but don't remember for sure. Plastic is cool too.

Just returned from Auto Zone and it was $8.98 for a quart. It had attached, a $3.00 mail in rebate, so...$5.98

There's AutoZones all over Nothern Virginia.

There's one on 236 just off 95. IIRC there's one down near Pohick and Rt 1 somewhere as well.

Where in Alexandria are you?

Got news for you, aint nuthin down near Pohick and Rt 1.

There's one South of Crystal City off Rt 1 and one out in Annandale. Half hour drive to either, just not convenient. I'll have it delivered. :-D

I live on property that was part of Geroge Washington's farms. It's a 1/4 mile walk to Mount Vernon.

Jeff, I went to Evapo-rust.com, click on "Where to buy"
and entered my zip code.
I just noticed Advance Auto Parts and Tractor Suppy Company are
also on the home page. Larry's store is not listed as a retailer.
