Not sure where this might be most appropriate but since I use this tip to finish small pieces off the lathe I'll bring it up here.

Often I like to spray finish on small turned pieces. Really don't want to try to mask off the lathe bed, chuck, tailstock, etc., etc. to do it on the lathe but it's hard, for me, to get an even finish on something round and small if it's not turning and the spray can/gun is stationary. Soooo ..

Visited a local 2nd hand store looking for an old turntable:

Since I was loathe to sacrifice any of my vinyl as a base I simply band sawed one out of masonite:

Drilling a hole centered on the turntable spindle centered the 'platter', a small scrap glued on top provides the base for a bamboo shiska-bob skewer on which to impale the sea urchin shells which can then be rotated (78rpm for us oldies in the crowd) to get a nice even finish.

Now for the humor associated with it -

As I was browsing around in the 2nd hand store a young lass, perhaps 18 or so, approached and asked if she could help me find something. I asked if she knew if they had any turntables. She: blank stare. Me - explained they're for playing records. She: blank stare. Eventually the light went on and we located the one in the photo.

Anyway, I thought it was humorous.

Hey Dennis,

I recently made a turntable (aka Lazy Susan) for my finishing room, but it needs to be turned by hand. I like your old school, "out of the box" approach. :D

BTW- Do you know how many grooves are on the average long playing record?

Cheers,
Tom

No, I have no idea. But I'm still amazed at how all that audio information could be captured let alone mass produced within that barely visible scratch in a disk of vinyl.

OK, how many? And how far would an LP track extend if unwound?

Hey Dennis,

Only two, one on each side, and they spiral to the center. :D

Cheers,
Tom
