Finally cleared off the lathe and dragged out several yet to be finished projects. This first is a spalted maple box bottom that was waiting for a top. I wasn't completely satisfied with the proportions of the top and finial and eventually parted off the finial just below the white (bone) detail, shortening the lid portion. Unfortunately it was a gift to someone who's since departed and I forgot to take a photo.

Image

The lid is maple burl. Finish is beeswax and mineral oil.

This one started out as a small candy dish but seemed to want a lid and finial. Cherry bottom & finial with walnut as the lid. The black accent line was burned in with a wire. More of a simple exercise to get back into the "swing" of things.

Both are about 4" in diameter.

Would appreciate critique ...!

BEAUTIFUL!

Those are both just outstanding. I'm trying to get the knack of bowls, and lids will be next on the agenda. I may be hitting you up for help and advice.

Don't know if I'm the 'go to guy' for advice on boxes and such, Frank, but I'll sure share what little I know.

More 'stuff from the lathe:

A rather simple walnut bowl -

Image

Spalted maple is a favorite medium. This one's about 5" in diameter

Image

I tend to turn bowls with a thicker wall than most just to give them more substance. These are all intended for use rather than shelf display.

Haven't done a lot of natural edge pieces. This is one of the few I managed to pull off fairly well.

Image

Another favorite and plentiful material in these parts is big leaf maple burl.

Image

Black locust. Not one of my favorites. It's quite hard and doesn't smell all that great. It is pretty stable once dry, though.

Image

This walnut platter was my first attempt at making "feet" on a large piece. I think I need to invest in a sanding disk for my drill motor! Removed most of the waste between the feet by hand with a chisel on this one.

Image

Finish on all these is beeswax & mineral oil except for the natural edge piece which is shellac.

Comments/critique welcome.

WOW, you've been busy I see. Great work on all, but I especially love the live edged one. Just gorgeous. 8) 8) 8)
