I'm looking forward to putting my lathe to use soon, and am thinking about making some wine-bottle stoppers as Christmas gifts. Looking through a couple catalogs online, I see several different styles of hardware. What do you recommend for hardware??

Thanks!

There have been reports that the acids in wines can cause the "plated" stoppers to start to peel over time. I have switched to using only the solid stainless steel stoppers that Ruth Niles developed and markets at: http://torne-lignum.com/

Good Luck!
Bob

You can also check out Penn State Industries and Craft Supplies out of Utah. I know that Craft Supplies also carries a Stainless Steel stopper but it has one wide band rubber gasket with several flanges, vs 3 individual O rings.

I've been using the one that WoodCraft carries that has 2 O rings, but was just informed that one I'd made for a buddy, had lost one of it's O rings. So I'm thinking about switching to Craft Supplies. They are also just a little cheaper than the ones Bob uses.

BTW, Penn State also carries a mandrel that screws onto the lathe drive instead of inserting into the #2MT. I kind of like that too.

I like these.

Make it so you end up with a 1/2" hole in the bottom. Stick a 1/2" dowel in it, cut it at the appropriate length and slide one on.

Just wait till you've turned your first bowl. I've dropped $100 in the past two days just buying blanks. :D :D :D

What do you mean "BUY". I haven't bought wood for turning in 10 years at least. Just cruse around and when you see someone cutting down a tree ask if you can have a few logs.

I've got so much wood I try to give it away. Just ask Nailer. :D :D :D

Assuming I do succeed in this turning stuff, to whatever degree ;-) I'll never look at my scrap pile the same way. And the weeping cherry tree next to the driveway is doomed -- it's got two burls growing on it!! Might be a year before I work my way up to 'em, but work up I will. :D
