As you all are aware, turning produces a large amount of waste. You end up with a lot of exotic woods and not so exotic wood shavings. My question is ( I am thinking out of the box or maby out of my @#$$ ) has anyone tried to compress various mixtures of the shavings with an acrilic substance and produce a turning medium? I am just curious if it would work, how to go about it, would it even be worth the effort, and what a turned and polished product would look like.

Being an Engineer, I have thought about.

And being and Engineer I've come up with so many ways it could go wrong and what it would cost compaired to buying another piece of wood.

But, don't let me stop you from trying, I've been wrong before. :-D

One of our members (El Mostro) has made pen blanks out of many unusual materials. He mixed it with CA glue which is an "acrylic substance", I guess.

Here are some of his posts to give you some idea of what he was doing.

Over at the Pacific Northwest Penturners Association, http://www.pnpta.org, they have a lot of information. It is a fairly new forum and is not real busy. I think someone there could give you good advise on casting.

I don't remember the supplier but a while back I had a catalog that listed a coumpound for casting mixtures with various elements mixed with a clear compound. So there is something out there for you.
